How To Clean Your Dog’s Ears At Home

Lakeside Animal Hospital

Meet Benny, the adorable pup we’re focusing on today. One of the essential aspects of pet care is ear cleaning. Let’s explore the best methods for keeping your furry friend’s ears healthy and infection-free. There are two primary techniques we recommend for this task, and we’ll walk you through the steps and some essential tips.

Method 1: Direct Application

Our first method involves directly applying a cleaning solution into your dog’s ear canal. This approach works best if your dog is comfortable with the process. However, some dogs may be a little apprehensive due to the noise when squeezing the bottle.

Method 2: Soaking and Gently Massaging

An alternative method for ear cleaning is to soak cotton balls, gauze or cotton rounds with the cleaning solution. Gently place these soaked materials in your dog’s ear canal and massage the area.

Safe Cleaning Practices

You can also use a q-tip for cleaning the external pinna area and crevices to remove dirt and debris but should avoid pushing q-tips deep into the ear canal, as this can cause harm. After cleaning, ensure that the ear is thoroughly dried to prevent moisture from lingering.

Cleaning Frequency

For routine ear maintenance, we recommend cleaning your dog’s ears every 2 to 4 weeks. This schedule helps prevent the build-up of dirt and bacteria. However, if you notice any unusual discharge, it’s crucial to consult your veterinarian for a professional evaluation.

Special Considerations for Swimmers

If your furry friend loves the water and is a frequent swimmer, it’s essential to clean their ears after each water adventure. This prevents water from accumulating in the ear canal, which can lead to infections or yeast growth.

Choosing the Right Cleaning Solution

In our veterinary hospital, we use a product called TrizUltra + Keto Flush which has both antifungal and antibacterial properties. While this specific product may only be available at veterinary offices, there are over-the-counter alternatives you can find at pet stores such as Chewy, PetSmart and Petco. These products are suitable for regular maintenance but might not offer the same advanced properties as the one we use in the hospital.

Remember, caring for your dog’s ears is a crucial part of their overall well-being. Regular cleaning helps prevent infections, discomfort and other ear-related issues. Whether you opt for direct application or the soaking and massaging method, ensuring proper ear hygiene should be a routine part of your pet care regimen. By following these guidelines, you can keep your furry friend’s ears healthy and happy, allowing them to enjoy their days to the fullest.
